Pregnancy Must Haves: A Few of My Favorite Items to Help Prepare for a Smoother Delivery!

By Lisa Steciw · March 28, 2025 · Updated May 6, 2025 · 3 minute read

There are so many items labeled as a “must have” for pregnancy. I'm not saying there is one item that will guarantee labor and birth will be easy. But with the right tools, techniques, and comforts used during pregnancy—and in labor—it can be a whole different experience.

As both a birth doula and prenatal yoga instructor, these are several of my favorite items to recommend.

Birth ball

Double-check the size you need based on your height. During pregnancy, a birth ball can support pelvic mobility, posture, strengthening, and stretching. In labor it can provide support and encourage baby toward an optimal position. It can also be useful postpartum for gentle movement and soothing your baby.

Many positions and movements use the ball without bouncing. If you're local, ask about Lisa's birth-ball workshops.

Red raspberry leaf tea

Herbs are a form of medicine, so check with your healthcare provider before adding something new to your diet. Be certain the product is red raspberry leaf; red raspberry is different.

Many women use this tea near the end of pregnancy and postpartum. It can be enjoyed hot or cold, in tea bags or loose leaf.

Massage tools

Relaxation matters. A tennis ball, fascial-release ball, handheld vibrating massager, or wooden roller may help tight muscles release. During labor, these tools can help your body soften between contractions, especially while you're leaning over a birth ball or on hands and knees.

Affirmation cards

Your mindset is powerful, and pregnancy is a good time to nurture it. Write a simple affirmation on a sticky note for your mirror or car, choose a locally made set, or use meaningful Bible verses.

Simple phrases such as “I am peaceful” or “I am relaxed” can become familiar anchors before labor begins.

The Birth Partner book

This is a thorough resource for mothers and partners, with words, illustrations, charts, and highlighted reference sections that are easy to find when you need them.

These tools can help make pregnancy more comfortable and build calm and confidence as you prepare for birth.
